DECOR Spatolato - the appearance of depth of natural marble

The SPATOLATO technique allows us to achieve the appearance of depth of natural stone and broken segments in a stone. In nature, marble is a semi-transparent stone and its colour shade is provided bymineral admixtures and other components.

We can draw nearer to the desired shade with a wide range of shades and also to the natural marble structure with the selected SPATOLATO technique.

Preparation and manufacturing

Priprava podlagePreparation of surface

  1. Applying an undercoat: the surface should be dry, solid, without any oil stains and similar impurities. Ensure colour equality of the surface and apply an undercoat, if necessary, to achieve a uniform colour tone of the surface. Use white paint.
  2. Smoothing the surface: with Jubolin filler (Jubolin, P25 or P50) using a stainless smoothing trowel.
  3. Sanding the surface: removing dust particles by hoovering or a fine brush.
  4. Impregnation: with Akril emulsion (1:1).

Manufacturing process

Application of Marmorin

(first coat) with a stainless trowel. Coat thickness ~0.1-0.2 mm. Place Marmorin in the size of a nut on the trowel and apply it on the surface in a thin layer with mixed strokes. Collect excess material simultaneously so that there remains the desired thickness of application on the wall. In the case of the Marmorin Spatolato structure, the direction of work is important. If the pattern is applied from top to bottom, the appearance seems sharper. When applying Marmorin from bottom to top, lines in the final picture appear softer.

Application of Marmorin

(second and third coat) follow the same pattern as with the first application. An individual application must be dry before the next one is applied. When the last, i.e. the third, application of Marmorin is applied, wait until the surface is dried well. If necessary, sand the surface gently between applications with sandpaper of granulation 300 or more.

Smoothing the surface:

When the surface is dried well, smooth it with a metal smoothing trowel. At first, smooth it gently and then more and more intensively and applying greater force of pressure on the surface. Strokes with the smoothing trowel should be made in all directions. The surface's degree of gloss changes from semi-gloss to shiny and conveys great depth. By smoothing, we achieve greater contrast since the shade of Marmorin is dark, glittering and abundant on places that are smoothed, and partially matt and lighter in indentations.

Final part with the coating of Marmorin emulsion

To achieve water repellence and greater gloss, coat Marmorin with Marmorin emulsion. Thus the surface becomes less sensitive to touch, dust, grease, water and similar.
